Pilot Speak

So, I was waiting for system updates on one of my computers a little while ago and I was playing Star Wars: Rogue Squadron on the Nintendo 64. Anyway, during the first mission, Luke says “Maintain visual scanning.” I’ve always found that a kind of funny line. Red Leader also said that in the first film and Luke immediately started looking around. So, is “maintain visual scanning” just pilot speak for “use your frakking eyes” or what? That’s what it seems like to me.

  1. Wouldn’t you be toast by the time you ‘visually’ scanned? Just ask’n. But what a funny line, never caught that. Though, to be honest, I’ve only seen the film about 4-5 times.

    • You would think so, given the relative positions of flying objects and the fact that radar has a much longer range than the naked eye.

Though, weapons ranges and such aren’t quite what they are in Star Trek, or even in modern day missiles. In fact, they don’t seem to use a lot of missiles in Wars, it’s more laser blasters. They’re pretty much good old fashioned dogfights. So, it’s kind of one of those “if they can see you, you can see them” kind of things.

I still think it’s a silly line, though. I mean, “keep your eyes peeled” works just as well. 😉
